What Is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It primarily attacks the lungs, but it can also affect the kidneys, spine, and brain. Transmission occurs when an infected person coughs or sneezes, releasing droplets that carry the bacteria into the air.

Latent TB vs. Active TB

Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI)

In LTBI, the bacteria remain dormant in the body. You do not feel sick and cannot spread TB to others, but treatment is recommended to prevent activation.

Active Tuberculosis Disease

Active TB means the bacteria are multiplying and damaging tissues. Symptoms develop and the disease can be contagious. Without treatment, active TB can be life-threatening.

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent cough lasting more than two weeks
  • Coughing up blood or sputum
  • Chest pain
  • Night sweats and fever
  • Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

Risk Factors & Prevention

  • Close contact with someone who has active TB
  • Weakened immune system (HIV, diabetes, certain medications)
  • Living or working in high-risk settings (healthcare, shelters)
  • Poor ventilation in crowded spaces

Preventive strategies include airborne precautions, BCG vaccination (in certain countries), and prompt treatment of latent infections.

Diagnosis & Testing

Accurate diagnosis is critical. At O2 Pulmonary & Sleep Group, we employ:

  • PPD skin test (Mantoux) or Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) blood test
  • Sputum culture and nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT)
  • Chest X-ray or CT scan
  • Thoracentesis for suspected pleural effusion

Treatment & Management

The standard TB regimen includes multiple antibiotics over six to nine months:

  • Initial phase: Isoniazid, Rifampin, Ethambutol, Pyrazinamide (2 months)
  • Continuation phase: Isoniazid and Rifampin (4–7 months)

We monitor liver function, manage side effects, and ensure adherence through directly observed therapy (DOT) if indicated.
