Sleepwalking – Causes, Risks & Treatment in Dallas & McKinney
Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, occurs when a person gets out of bed and walks or performs activities while still asleep. At O2 Pulmonary & Sleep Group in Dallas & McKinney, our board-certified sleep specialists diagnose and treat sleepwalking to improve safety, sleep quality, and overall health.
What Happens During a Sleepwalking Episode?
Episodes usually occur within the first 1–2 hours of sleep and may last a few minutes or longer. Common behaviors include sitting up in bed, walking around, performing routine tasks, or speaking without awareness. In rare cases, individuals may leave the home or engage in dangerous activities.
When to See a Sleep Specialist
Seek medical evaluation if:
- Episodes occur more than once or twice a week
- There is risk of injury to yourself or others
- You are an adult experiencing new-onset sleepwalking
Our Dallas & McKinney sleep doctors can identify underlying causes such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or restless leg syndrome.
Possible Causes
- Sleep deprivation or irregular sleep schedule
- Stress, fever, or illness
- Medications or substances affecting the brain
- Underlying medical conditions such as GERD, migraines, or mental health disorders
Diagnosis & Treatment
We may recommend a polysomnography (sleep study) to monitor brain waves, oxygen levels, heart rate, breathing, and movement during sleep. Treatment focuses on addressing underlying causes, improving sleep hygiene, and ensuring safety.
